  • Is relevant (linked to students' prior knowledge which creates meaning)

  • Is challenging (extends prior knowledge) and has a degree of complexity

  • Can be inquired into and applied in different ways

  • Transcends disciplines

  • Is an effective vehicle for developing the 5 essential elements (Concepts, Skills, Knowledge, Attitudes, Action)
